Why Be Catholic?

Someone turned my attention to this op-ed recently.

Sometimes, when people learn that you are Catholic (or in my case, that I work for the Church on top of it), they might be tempted to write you off as foolish and naive at best or even narrow-minded at worst. Issues and hypocrisies like those noted in the op-ed might come to their minds.

How could any intelligent individual participate in an organization like that? Not an entirely unreasonable question, to be fair. My response? In the words of Peter when Jesus asks if he too will leave Him, "To whom else shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." And I don’t mean eternal life as in whatever happens after death. I mean now. To where else would I go? Imperfect though it may be (it’s made up of humans, after all!), the Church has given me the very tools with which I now challenge the Church to manifest its best self. And it is the wisdom, tradition, and community of the Church that time and time again has manifested the best in me throughout my life (almost in spite of me).

I'm not much of a St. Augustine fan, but I can really get on board with him when he says "The Church is a whore, but she's still my mother."

Newman Gala 2014 — A Harvest of Blessings!

On Saturday, November 1, 2014, we will be having a great time at Harvest of Blessings: Newman Gala 2014. The CSC is shaking it up by moving downtown to the Four Seasons, adding a comedy act to the night and finishing the whole evening with a rip roaring good time of Dueling Piano's with Minneapolis Howling at the Moon star Kevin Gale.

At the dueling piano show, YOU can request any song from any genre. The performers can cover hundreds of artists, from Elton John, to Macklemore, to Journey, and everything in between. Two piano players, two keyboards, one drum set, and a whole lot of fun. Make it a dance party by requesting songs like, "YMCA" or "The Cupid Shuffle," or make it a sing-a-long night by requesting "Piano Man" or "Friends in Low Places." You request it, they'll play it!

We look forward to seeing you at The Four Seasons!

If you have any questions, comments, or contributions to the Gala, please contact Susan Quinn at quinn@washucsc.org or (314) 724-1270.
